Every reform-minded Catholic should read this book, not so much to follow how 28 forms of authority have been used and abused, but more to find that a road is possible between two rock-hard conflicting positions. John Wijngaards makes you think by closing each chapter with questions for consideration. Without mentioning them, he recognises two adamant beliefs facing each other, bishops faithful to tradition on the one side and critical Catholics on the other. The latter continue to publicly propose to reform the feudal system, the first are convinced that those reforms will lead to disaster.
This book contains arguments for a way out in the middle. The writer leaves the application to the existing impasse to the reader. Without saying so, he recalls Pope Francis’ vision of making the Church an address of help for the needy where there is room for the ministry of female and male deacons in the style of the first thousand years of Christianity.
Elsewhere you can read that, among other things, the Pope provides personal support to migrants who narrowly escaped drowning. According to John Wijngaards, such an example fits the parable of the woman with little yeast and a large barrel of flour. You can read in it the challenge to every believer to share responsibility in the fermentation process.

Iedere hervormingsgezinde katholiek zou dit boek moeten lezen, niet zozeer om te volgen hoe 28 vormen van autoriteit gebruikt en misbruikt zijn maar meer om aanwijzingen te vinden dat er een weg mogelijk is tussen twee rotsvaste tegenstrijdige vormen. John Wijngaards zet je aan het denken door elk hoofdstuk af te sluiten met vragen ter overweging . Zonder ze te noemen ziet hij twee onvermurwbare overtuigingen tegenover elkaar staan, traditiegetrouwe bisschoppen en kritische katholieken. De laatste blijven publiekelijk voorstellen om het feodale systeem te hervormen, de eersten weten zeker dat die hervormingen tot een ramp zullen leiden.
In dit boek zijn argumenten te vinden voor een middenweg De toepassing op de bestaande impasse laat de schrijver over aan de lezer. Zonder het te zeggen roept hij het idee op van paus Franciscus om de kerk een adres te maken van hulp voor noodlijdenden waar een taak weggelegd is voor vrouwelijke en mannelijke diakens in de stijl van de eerste duizend jaar christendom. Elders is te lezen dat de paus persoonlijk steun geeft onder meer aan gevluchte drenkelingen. Volgens John Wijngaards past bij zo’n voorbeeld de parabel van de vrouw met weinig gist en een groot vat meel. Je kunt er de vraag in lezen aan elke gelovige om een deel van het gistingsproces voor eigen rekening te nemen.
